June 7, 2000 - Interview: Grey Describes "Real Progress" in Arms Control. Grey said that the main U.S. objective for the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament is the successful negotiation of a treaty to ban the production of fissile materials. "We have all agreed for years that an FMCT (Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty) was the first priority, so we think we should start negotiating on that now," he said.

The United States has urged the United Nations Conference on Disarmament to seriously negotiate a treaty to ban the production of what's called "fissile" materials. The American ambassador, backed by Britain and France, introduced a new proposal Thursday to speed-up work on the Treaty at a meeting in Geneva of the 61-nation Conference.
